A sweet take on Sugaring

Sugaring? Hmmm…

Many are still wondering, what is it - and why does it involve sugar? Does it have anything to do with cooking?

It doesn’t have anything to do with cooking and it’s not as complicated as what you’re thinking.

Sugaring – is actually a method of hair removal. Yep, you read that right. Hair removal. Who would have thought we can have sugar and hair removal in one sentence, right?

Let’s talk about sugaring and how it makes hair removal simple, safe and eco-friendly.

Sugaring is dated back to 1900 BC and has been practiced ever since. The term ‘Sugaring’ is from the method and the ingredients in the paste you use.

No, we are not scrubbing your body hair off with granulated sugar…

Instead, a paste is made from lemon, water, and of course sugar. It is mixed over low heat to achieve a sticky consistency, which removes the hair from your body by pulling it quickly removing the root.

Why do we love sugaring?

Sugaring offers many benefits. Sugaring is known to eliminate ingrown hairs because, unlike waxing, the sugar paste is applied against the direction of hair growth and is flicked off in the same direction the hair is growing in. It doesn’t adhere to live skin cells so there is really no risk of lifting the skin or causing irritation - and so it can be used on the most sensitive skin.

By removing dead skin cells, sugaring helps with gentle skin exfoliation revealing smoother, softer skin. The temperature of the paste is either on low heat or can be used cold as it will warm up naturally with the body’s temperature. It is also noticeably less painful compared to waxing.

The number one reason why we love sugaring is that it is all natural. Yes, in this time and age, sugaring remains simple. It doesn’t contain any toxic ingredients, plastics or resins. Disposing of sugar paste after every service is easy – we compost it!  Using, biodegradable gloves, biodegradable trash liners, corn starch and wooden popsicle sticks, there is no reason why we can’t compost it.

I guess you could say we’re not just taking care of your skin, but the environment, too. No harmful chemicals = creating zero waste for the landfill (which is honestly, almost unheard of in the beauty industry).

So, when? How? Where?

If you dread getting waxed, try sugaring! If you always get little white pimples after waxing, try sugaring! If you are on prescription creams or sensitive, try sugaring! If you are left with lots of hair after your waxing session, try sugaring! We promise we will change your mind!

And if it’s your first time ever having your hair removed – remember, we are still taking out your hair by the root. You will still feel it, but your skin will be trauma free.

Sugaring is safe for almost everyone and it’s easy to book a sugaring session here at Rockridge Day Spa. (You can book here.)
